Caravaggio and the Masters of Light

All Month
On view through June 28 at Rome’s Museo Storico della Fanteria, Caravaggio and the Masters of Light plunges visitors into the dramatic world of Caravaggism, tracing the renowned painter’s seismic influence on a generation of artists. The exhibition’s emotional centerpiece is The Incredulity of Saint Thomas (pictured) on loan from the Bildergalerie in Potsdam; a powerful example of Caravaggio’s radical use of light, unflinching realism, and spiritual intensity. Surrounding works by followers such as Bartolomeo Manfredi, Orazio Gentileschi, Carlo Saraceni, Jusepe de Ribera, and others reveal how his visual language reshaped European painting. The result is an immersive, enlightening journey into an artistic revolution that changed how we see art forever.

Hokusai The Great Master of Japanese Art

All Month
This month, until June 29, Palazzo Bonaparte will be hosting the largest show ever held in Italy on Katsushika Hokusai, Japan’s most influential artist and a central figure in global visual culture. A prolific and visionary painter and printmaker, Hokusai is best known worldwide for his ukiyo-e prints, where nature, surging waters, landscapes, female figures, and everyday Japanese life are transformed into a poetic and strikingly modern vision. The exhibition traces his artistic journey, from works rooted in tradition such as The Fifty-Three Stations of the Tōkaidō, through iconic masterpieces including The Great Wave off Kanagawa and Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji, to his most innovative creations, notably the celebrated manga and decorative illustrated albums. Featuring over 200 works from the National Museum in Krakow, the show is enriched by rare books, precious Japanese objects, musical instruments, armor, and traditional costumes, offering a vivid dialogue between art, daily life, and spirituality.

The Neptune of Lyon

All Month
Until June 7, visitors to the ground-floor gallery of the Museo Barracco get to admire the monumental statue of Neptune, shown to the public here for the first time. The sculpture, dating back to the 3rd century AD, originally comes from the ancient Roman city of Lugdunum, today’s Lyon.
Almost life-size, the sea god is rising from the water, with his hair arranged in distinctive “wet curls.” Experts believe Neptune once held a trident in his left hand, and possibly a dolphin in his right. The statue likely stood in a monumental setting, such as a temple in Lugdunum, the capital of the Roman province of Gallia Lugdunensis. It was rediscovered in 1859 in the Rhône River. museobarracco.it

Vasari and Rome

All Month
To mark the 450th anniversary of the death of Giorgio Vasari, the Capitoline Museums at Palazzo Caffarelli present Vasari and Rome, an important tribute to one of the Renaissance’s most influential figures. The exhibition traces Vasari’s artistic and cultural jour-ney during his different stays in Rome (he was born in Arezzo but had a deep and long-lasting relationship with the Eternal City), revealing the many sides of the celebrated painter, architect, stage designer, and biographer. Through masterpieces on loan from lead-ing Italian and international institutions, such as the outstanding Resurrection of Christ (pictured) from the Pinacoteca Nazionale di Siena, the display explores how Rome, through its ancient art and the example of masters like Raphael and Michelangelo, shaped the young artist and propelled his rapid rise in the service of powerful cardinals and popes.
