The art of writing
From fountain pens to vintage typewriters: Italian writing tradition across generations
The walls of Antica Cartotecnica tell a story of both penmanship and craftsmanship. They are adorned with rare fountain pens, everyday writing tools, fine leather goods, and historic school or office instruments: golden protractors, wooden drafting tables, ink bottles—each one unique,—old pencils preserved in their boxes, vintage pens, ink blotters, vintage stationery, and typewriters from every era. This one-of-a-kind stationery shop traces its origins back to 1930, when Elisa Berti, grandmother of the current owner, purchased a small retail space from a nearby wholesale stationery business, and decided to specialize in writing products only—pens, inks, leather notebooks, and paper. Today, her grandson Alessandro continues her legacy. Having grown up surrounded by these treasures, he brings deep expertise and passion to curating the shop’s collection. His knowledge allows him to offer exclusive niche items, including Antica Cartotecnica’s own line of Italian-made bags and notebooks, available in custom designs upon request. What truly sets Antica Cartotecnica apart, however, is its ongoing pursuit of collector’s pieces—extraordinarily rare finds such as bakelite objects, notebooks, and world maps from the 1940s—that captivate enthusiasts worldwide. Among its premium brands are Montblanc, Pelikan, Aurora, Filofax, Parker, Montegrappa, Faber-Castell, and Leonardo Officina Italiana. The shop also proudly belongs to the prestigious Roman Association of Outstanding Historic Stores.
