Richard Avedon. In the American West

Richard Avedon was one of the most influential fashion and portrait photographers of the 20th century, and the exhibition Richard Avedon. In the American West at PalaExpo, on display until December 31, showcases one of his celebrated portrait series. Between 1979 and 1984, Avedon travelled extensively across the American West, seeking out truck stops, county fairs, rodeos, amusement parks, oil fields, mining sites and slaughterhouses. Using a simple white backdrop set up outdoors and natural light alone, he photographed more than 1,000 people: ranchers, miners, waitresses, drifters, amusement-park workers, and the unemployed. By turning his camera on ordinary people, whom he saw as America’s hidden strength, Avedon sought to broaden his portrait of the US. The exhibition features the complete series of 110 prints produced for the book, alongside archival material from the Richard Avedon Foundation.

The Power of Portraiture: Egypt and Rome. The Faces of Fayum

The exhibition The Power of Portraiture: Egypt and Rome. The Faces of Fayum (Ara Pacis Museum, until 2 May, 2027), brings together the celebrated Fayum portraits, among the most remarkable and rare painted images of the ancient world. Painted on wooden panels just a few millimetres thick, in tempera or encaustic, and using pigments mixed with hot wax, these portraits were placed over the faces of the deceased between the layers of their mummy bandages, preserving lifelike images of men, women, and children. Many of the 50 portraits on show are on loan from Egypt for the first time, such as Tondo of the Two Brothers, while 23 come from major museums around the world. This is a rare opportunity to see such an extraordinary collection in one place. Running from November 6.

Food. Flavor in Art

Food. Il gusto nell’arte (Flavor in art) at Chiostro del Bramante explores the fascinating relationship between art and food, a universal theme that has shaped human history, culture, and everyday life. From traditional still lifes to contemporary installations, the exhibition looks at food not simply as nourishment, but as a source of creativity, identity, memory, and social connection. Artworks from different periods and disciplines are brought together with objects, images and installations, exploring the rituals, colors, forms and meanings associated with food.
The exhibition also reflects on changing attitudes towards eating and consumption, from ancient traditions to contemporary artistic experimentation, showing how food can become both a cultural heritage and a powerful form of artistic expression.
