Sofia Coppola’s La Traviata

Don’t miss this stylish revival of Verdi’s timeless tragedy

Directed by Oscar-winning filmmaker Sofia Coppola and featuring costumes by the late Valentino, this month’s production of Verdi’s La Traviata promises to be a major highlight of the season. The collaboration between Coppola and the legendary Italian couturier began years ago and has already been presented in several cities. Now it’s back in Rome, and will be featuring at Teatro Costanzi from June 21 to 30.

Based on Alexandre Dumas fils’ La Dame aux Camélias, the opera explores themes of love, sacrifice, and social judgment through the story of Violetta Valéry, a young Parisian courtesan who falls in love with Alfredo and chooses to leave behind Paris, its luxuries, and its excesses for a quieter life in the countryside. Their happiness is short-lived, however, as Alfredo’s father, Germont, intervenes and asks Violetta to leave his son, fearing their relationship will jeopardize his daughter’s marriage.

Though she resists at first, Violetta ultimately agrees. She writes a farewell letter to Alfredo, pretending she longs to return to her former life in Paris. Devastated and furious, Alfredo confronts her publicly and humiliates her by throwing money at her feet. As Violetta lies dying of tuberculosis, Alfredo learns the truth and returns to beg her forgiveness. The two are briefly reunited before she dies.

A timeless masterpiece, La Traviata continues to resonate for its powerful portrayal of love, loss, and human fragility, expressed with the full emotional force of opera. operaroma.it
